# Test your value proposition against customer evidence before launch

To test a value proposition before launch, gather the customer evidence you already hold, then ask it seven questions: which problem customers name, how much it matters, what they do today, the words they use, what would make them doubt the claim, how roles differ, and what is missing. Mark each claim supported, contradicted or unproven, and talk to real customers where the evidence is thin.

Key takeaways

- Check each claim in your value proposition against interviews, calls and tickets before launch.
- Ask what problem customers name, how they describe it, what they do today and what would make them doubt you.
- Mark each claim supported, contradicted or no evidence, and reword the contradicted ones.
- Thin, old or narrow evidence, and new markets, are reasons to talk to real customers instead.
- CB Insights found 43% of 385 failed VC-backed companies cited poor product-market fit.

*Use case · Product marketing*

## The situation

You're a product marketer a few weeks from launch. The value proposition is drafted, the team likes it, and the deck is nearly done. Nobody has checked it against what customers have actually said.

That's the usual gap. The proposition comes from workshops, competitor pages and the roadmap. The customer evidence sits in interview notes, call transcripts and support tickets that nobody has time to reread.

Getting this wrong is costly. CB Insights looked at 431 VC-backed companies that shut down since 2023. For the 385 where it could identify reasons, [43% cited poor product-market fit](https://www.cbinsights.com/research/startup-failure-reasons-top/). A weak value proposition isn't the whole story, but it's often where a mismatch first shows up in words.

You don't need a new study to find out. The evidence you already hold can tell you whether your claim is clear, relevant and believable.

## The questions to ask

| Question | Why it matters | What a useful answer looks like |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Which problem do customers say they have, in their own words? | Your proposition should name a problem they already recognise. | The same problem comes up again and again, in plain language, without your product terms. |
| How important is that problem next to the others they mention? | A real problem can still be a low priority. | It's among the first things people raise, with a cost attached: time, money or risk. |
| What do they do about it today? | Workarounds show how big the problem is, and what you're really up against. | Specific tools, habits or workarounds, not "nothing, it's fine". |
| Which words do they use for the outcome they want? | Borrowed words land better than invented ones. | Repeated phrases you could put in a headline almost unchanged. |
| What would make them doubt or ignore this claim? | Objections are cheaper to fix before launch than after. | Concrete worries: cost, switching effort, trust, security, past disappointments. |
| Do different roles or segments describe the value differently? | A claim that works for a user can fail with a buyer. | Clear differences by role, company size or industry, kept separate rather than averaged. |
| What's missing from the evidence? | Silence isn't agreement. | A short list of roles, segments or topics the evidence doesn't cover. |

![Four-step workflow for testing a value proposition: evidence, question, customer perspective, decision. The customer perspective step is highlighted.](https://www.askthecustomer.ai/hs-fs/hubfs/blog-images/uc1-workflow.png?width=1600&name=uc1-workflow.png)

*From the evidence you hold to a launch decision.*

## How to do it in Ask The Customer

1. **Upload the evidence.** Add interview notes and transcripts, call transcripts, support exports and research documents as files. Favour recent material, and note which segments it covers.
2. **Put your draft proposition in the question.** Paste the exact wording and the claims behind it, so you're testing the real thing.
3. **Ask the questions above in the chat, one at a time.** Start with the problem, then workarounds, language, objections and roles. Ask what the evidence doesn't cover, and treat a thin answer as a warning.
4. **Read the customer perspective, then decide.** The answers are grounded in the evidence you uploaded. Keep the claim, reword it or hold it back.

> **Illustrative example:** a B2B software company selling to IT teams plans to launch with "Cut ticket handling time with automated triage." The team asks: "Based on our support exports and interview notes, how do IT managers describe sorting tickets today, and what worries them about automating it?" An illustrative answer might say that managers call sorting a daily irritation, but talk more about missed urgent tickets than about speed. They worry that automation would misroute something critical. The team could lead with "never miss an urgent ticket" and make speed a supporting claim. This is not real customer data.

## How to do it without a tool

You can run the same check by hand. It takes longer, but the method is the same.

1. Write the value proposition and its main claims on one page.
2. Gather your recent evidence for the segment you're launching to. Interview notes, call recordings and tickets all count.
3. Read it with the questions above beside you. Highlight pains, workarounds, objections and the customers' own phrases.
4. Build a simple grid. List each claim down the side, then mark it supported, contradicted or no evidence.
5. Reword any claim that's contradicted. Flag any with no evidence as something to test with real people.
6. Show the revised wording to 5 or so people from your target segment. Ask: "In your own words, what does this do?"

## Where this works, and where it doesn't

This works best when you have a fair amount of recent evidence from the customers you're launching to. It's weaker in four cases.

- **Thin or old evidence.** A few interviews from two years ago can mislead.
- **A new market.** Your evidence describes current customers, not people you haven't met.
- **Decisions that need behaviour.** What people say they value and what they pay for can differ.
- **A narrow sample.** If the evidence comes only from your friendliest customers, the answer will flatter you.

Ask The Customer supports customer understanding. It doesn't replace real customers. Talk to them directly when the stakes are high: a new segment, a price change, or a claim the evidence only half supports.

If you need the "why", interviews fit best. If you need numbers across many people, a survey fits better.

## FAQ

### Can I test a value proposition with old interviews?

Yes, as a first check. Note the dates, though. Older evidence shows what mattered then. Confirm with a few fresh conversations before you commit.

### How much evidence do I need?

There's no fixed number. Look for the same themes across several customers and roles. If an answer rests on one or two conversations, treat it as a hunch.

### What if the evidence contradicts our proposition?

That's a good result, found before launch. Reword the claim, narrow it to the segment where it holds, or run more interviews.

### Does this replace testing with real buyers?

No. It's a cheap first check on what you already know. Test the final wording with real people before you spend heavily on launch.
